Intro 2, Identity

From Wenger’s Communtiies of Practice

Focusing on identity extends the framework

  • narrows focus onto the person, but froma  social perspective
  • expands focus beyond COP, calling attention to braoder processes of id and social structires

“Buil;ding an identity consists of negotiating the meanings of our membership in social communtiies” Wenger assumes a distinct, and specific kind (a COP kind) of social; identity, as the stage for personal identity. -”We cannot become human by ourselves” We negotiate our identity socially. Even alone, or internally, we use symbols and ideas that are social in nature.

He sees personal identity as composed of social interaction, engagement and negotiation. They may have tension, or be at oodss, but they are not inherently comnflicted, or opposing.
